{blackbabes} Hulu Drama ‘Washington Black’ Adds Rupert Graves As Series Regular, Shaunette Renée Wilson As Recurring

Rupert Graves and Shaunette Renée Wilson

Rupert Graves (Riviera, Sherlock) has joined Hulu's anticipated limited series Washington Black as a series regular, with Shaunette Renée Wilson (Indiana Jones 5, The Resident) signing on to a recurring role.

Graves and Wilson join a previously announced series regular ensemble led by Ernest Kingsley Jr. and Sterling K. Brown, which also includes Eddie Karanja, Tom Ellis, Iola Evans, Edward Bluemel and Sharon Duncan-Brewster.

Selwyn Seyfu Hinds (Twilight Zone, Strange Adventures) is adapting the nine-episode drama series based on Esi Edugyan's international bestselling novel of the same name. It will follow the extraordinary 19th-century adventures of George Washington ("Wash") Black (Kingsley Jr.)—an 11-year-old boy on a Barbados sugar plantation who must flee after a shocking death threatens to upend his life. As previously announced, Brown is playing the gregarious, larger-than-life Medwin Harris, who traveled the world after a traumatic childhood as a Black refugee in Nova Scotia as the de facto Mayor of Black Halifax prioritizes the community over everything except Black, his young protégé. Meeting Wash sends him down a challenging path of self-discovery. And as the barricades around his heart start to fall, Medwin will learn to dream again.

Graves will play Mr. Goff, a British scientist who travels to Nova Scotia with his daughter, Tanna (Evans), after fleeing social stain, the dwindling of fortunes in London, and lessened influence with the Crown. Nova Scotia represents a new start. But Tanna's resistance to the marriage he's arranged for her, and her unexpected relationship with our titular hero, forces Goff to consider whether he will prove brave enough to put love first, or let his fears lead him to ruin.

Wilson will portray Big Kit, who is a singular, driving force in Wash's life. She teaches him to dream in the mythic vernacular of her West African heritage. And she teaches him to fight—because Kit is an engine of constant resistance. Fighting to create choice where none exists… for herself, and for this boy she protects. But can she shield him, or will she ultimately die trying?

Brown is exec producing the series from 20th Television under his Indian Meadows Productions banner, alongside Hinds, The Gotham Group's Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, Lindsay Williams and DJ Goldberg, and series writer Jennifer Johnson. Series directors Wanuri Kahiu and Mo Marable also serve as executive producers, along with Anthony Hemingway. Esi Edugyan is co-producing, with Hinds also serving as showrunner.

Graves recently starred opposite Julia Stiles in the Sky series, Riviera, and featured opposite Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in the BBC's Sherlock.  Other credits include the BBC miniseries The War of the Worlds, the third season of the hit BBC One series Last Tango in Halifax, the ABC series The Family, and director Autumn de Wilde's Emma. for Focus Features. He is also known for his acclaimed feature roles in A Room with a View, Maurice, A Handful of Dust, The Madness of King George, Different for Girls and Death at a Funeral.

Wilson recently wrapped filming opposite Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Mads Mikkelsen on James Mangold's Indiana Jones 5 for Lucasfilm, and previously appeared in Marvel's Black Panther, from director Ryan Coogler. She was most recently seen in the role of Dr. Mina Okofor in Antoine Fuqua's Fox medical drama, The Resident, and also also appeared in the "Treehouse" episode of the holiday horror anthology series Into the Dark for Blumhouse Television and Hulu. The Yale School of Drama graduate was awarded the prestigious Princess Grace Award in Theater while in her final year, and booked a nine-episode arc on Season 2 of Showtime's Billions, opposite Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti, immediately upon graduating. She also previously featured in the  Sundance 2018 film A Kid Like Jake, opposite Claire Danes and Octavia Spencer.

Graves is represented by APA and United Agents in London; Wilson by CAA, Authentic Talent and Literary Management, ImPRint and Fox Rothschild.

{blackbabes} Ashleigh Murray To Star In ‘Tom Swift’, Joining Tian Richards In the CW’s ‘Nancy Drew’ Spinoff

Riverdale and Katy Keene alumna Ashleigh Murray is returning to the CW as the female lead opposite Tian Richards in Nancy Drew spinoff Tom Swift, based on the classic book series. Tom Swift, which has a series order, comes from Nancy Drew co-creators/executive producers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, their Fake Empire banner and CBS Studios.

Co-created by Melinda Hsu Taylor, Noga Landau and Cameron Johnson, Tom Swift follows the serialized adventures of its titular gay, billionaire inventor (Richards) who is thrust into a world of sci-fi conspiracy and unexplained phenomena after the shocking disappearance of his father. Tom takes to the road on a quest to unravel the truth, leaving behind the comforts of his usual moneyed lifestyle, all while fighting to stay one step ahead of an Illuminati-scale group that's hellbent on stopping him. Tom's missions will require his genius and flair for innovation guided by love, romance, friendship and the mysteries of the universe yet unsolved.

Murray will play Zenzi Fullerton, who is efficient and effervescent but nobody's fool. She's been Tom's best friend since childhood and considers him family – and she's one of the few people who can keep up with Tom and read him for filth when necessary.

Taylor, Landau and Johnson also serve as executive producers along with Schwartz, Savage and Lis Rowinski. Tom Swift is a production of CBS Studios in association with Fake Empire.

Tom Swift originated as an unconventional backdoor pilot, with only Richards' character getting introduced on Nancy Drew last season. The rest of the characters have started casting after the project was picked up to series in August.

Murray recently was a lead in another CW spinoff series, Katy Keene, reprising her Riverdale role as Josie McCoy. She also played the co-lead in the Netflix movie Deidra & Laney Rob a Train. Murray is repped by Innovative Artists, and Kimberly Jago of G&G Talent.

{blackbabes} Rashida Jones To Headline Dark Comedy Series ‘Sunny’ Ordered By Apple TV+ From A24

Apple TV+ has handed a formal 10-episode series order to Sunny (fka Dark Manual), a half-hour darkly comedic drama starring and executive produced by Rashida Jones, from Katie Robbins (The Affair, The Last Tycoon) and A24. Lucy Tcherniak (Station Eleven, The End of the F***ing World) is attached to direct.

Written by Robbins, Sunny, which had been eying a green light for awhile, is based on the book "Dark Manual" by Japan-based award-winning Irish writer Colin O'Sullivan. The dark comedy stars Jones as Suzie, an American woman living in Kyoto, Japan, whose life is upended when her husband and son disappear in a mysterious plane crash. As "consolation" she's given Sunny, one of a new class of domestic robots made by her husband's electronics company. Robbins executive produces with Jones and Tcherniak, along with Ravi Nandan and Jess Lubben for A24. The series is expected to film in Japan.

Sunny marks the second collaboration for Apple, A24 and Jones following Sofia Coppola's On The Rocks. {blackbabes} ‘Criminal Minds’: As Dealmaking Continues, Six Stars Are Poised To Return For Revival On Paramount+

Almost a year after the Criminal Minds revival for Paramount+ was announced, there is still no one officially attached to the series. However, six fan favorite cast members, Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster, have agreed to come back, subject to closing their deals and availability, I have learned.

I hear finalizing the sextet's contracts has been put on hold as Criminal Minds lead studio, ABC Signature, moved to make a deal with the series' longtime executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer. Negotiations with Messer, who has an overall pact with the studio, are still ongoing, with the two sides getting closer but still not close enough for a deal to be imminent, sources said. Meanwhile, I hear that a license agreement for a 10-episode new season of Criminal Minds has been reached between Paramount+ and the studios behind the crime drama, ABC Signature and CBS Studios. (A license deal with the network/platforms as well as pacts with showrunner(s) and the cast are all necessary elements for a series to go forward.)

I hear Mantegna, Vangsness, Rodriguez, Cook, Tyler and Brewster are in sync and ready to finish negotiating once Messer's situation is resolved. The sextet represents the majority of Criminal Minds' cast in its 15th and final season. Missing from the list are original cast member Matthew Gray Gubler, who had indicated that he was ready to move on after playing Spencer Reid for 15 years, and Daniel Henney, who stars in The Wheel Of Time. The Prime Video series, which films in Prague, has been picked up for two more seasons, and any potential Henney guest appearance on Criminal Minds would be subject to his commitment to Wheel Of Time and scheduling, sources said.

Details about the actors' agreements for Criminal Minds are murky but I hear they are multi-year and, like with other series revivals, they are subject to actors' availability. I also hear the deals are not fully exclusive, with the cast members able to do major recurring roles on ongoing series and series regular parts on limited series if production does not interfere.

In its road to the screen so far, the Criminal Minds revival has gone through some major swings. It was announced with much fanfare at the streamer's coming-out presentation last February. By July 31, Brewster told fans on Twitter that "we think it's dead." Fast forward six months to Feb. 1 when Nicole Clemens, President, Paramount+ Original Scripted Series, told reporters that Criminal Minds is "alive and well." Behind the scenes, cast members and Messer were first approached about returning before the revival's announcement last February. I hear formal talks with the actors started first, then stalled for months over the summer, around the time Brewster gave her update. Negotiations with the cast resumed in the fall, and I hear general agreements were reached in November. Then in December, ABC Signature started formal negotiations with Messer, which are currently going through the process after a pause over the holidays, sources said.

"We are still very much in development on Criminal Minds," Clemens said during Paramount+'s virtual TCA executive session earlier this week. "We'll have more to share on that soon but it is alive and well."

Clemens indicated that the executive changes at the streamer last summer when she added her Paramount+ duties, contributed to the delay in the reboot's progress.

The original series, created by Jeff Davis, follows a group of criminal profilers who work for the FBI as members of its Behavioral Analysis Unit, using behavioral analysis and profiling to investigate crimes and find perpetrators. The group is led by Senior Agent David Rossi (Mantegna) and includes Agents JJ Jareau (Cook), Tara Lewis (Tyler) and Luke Alvez (Rodriguez) as well as Technical Analyst Penelope Garcia (Vangsness) and Unit Chief Emily Prentiss (Brewster).

The classic broadcast procedural is being serialized for binge-driven streaming consumption, with the team coming back together to investigate a single case over 10 episodes in the new season for Paramount+.

Criminal Minds is among ViacomCBS' most prized titles in the streaming era. It had been a top performer on Netflix since before the streamer started releasing viewership information. While Paramount+ has all 15 seasons, Netflix carries the first 12. They accounted for 33.9 billion minutes of viewing on the global platform, making it the most watched title on Netflix in 2021. Criminal Minds also was the third-most-streamed series in 2020 on Netflix behind The Office and Grey's Anatomy, with 590M hours viewed.

{blackbabes} Andrea Bordeaux Exits ‘Run the World’ Starz Series Over Covid Vaccine Mandate

As Starz's comedy series Run the World is preparing to start production on its second season, it will be without one of its stars, Andrea Bordeaux. Run the World studio Lionsgate Television confirmed to Deadline that Bordeaux is not returning for Season 2.

According to sources, Bordeaux's departure stems from the new Covid protocols on the show. Lionsgate requires casts as well as crews working in Zone A on their productions to be fully vaccinated.

I hear Lionsgate Television had conversations with Bordeaux about her concerns over the vaccine mandate and reasonable ways to accomodate them. Ultimately, the two sides could not find a workable solution, and Bordeaux opted to leave the series. The actor declined comment; she is expected to publicly address her decision in a statement at her own time.

Bordeaux's role will not be recast. It is unclear whether the series will introduce a new character to fill the void left by her departure as one of Run the World's four leads.

The Covid safety protocols agreed upon by the Hollywood studios and unions give producers "the option to implement mandatory vaccination policies for casts and crew in Zone A (which includes the actors and those who directly interact with them) on a production-by-production basis". More and more series have implemented the requirement, with some studios, like Disney TV Studios, Netflix and Lionsgate TV, making it mandatory on their U.S. productions.

This has led to a handful of cast member departures, including 9-1-1's Rockmond Dunbar's recent exit from the Fox/20th TV hit drama series.

Created, written and executive produced by Leigh Davenport, Run the World follows a group of smart, funny, and vibrant thirty-something Black women – fiercely loyal best friends – who live, work and play in Harlem.

Run The World

Bordeaux starred in Season 1 alongside fellow co-leads Amber Stevens West, Bresha Webb and Corbin Reid as well as Stephen Bishop and Tosin Morohunfola. Erika Alexander, Nick Sagar, Jay Walker and Tonya Pinkins recurred. The upcoming second season of Run the World, which films in New York, has a new showrunner, Rachelle Williams who executive produces alongside Davenport as well as Season 1 showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser.

Bordeaux  is known for her recurring role as Harley Hidoko on NCIS: Los Angeles. She also did an arc on TNT's Rizzoli & Isles.

{blackbabes} ‘The L Word: Generation Q’ Renewed For Season 3 By Showtime

The L Word: Generation Q will be back for another go-round. Showtime has renewed the sequel to the groundbreaking LGBTQ series for a 10-episode third season for premiere later this year.

Created by Ilene Chaiken, The L Word: Generation Q follows a group of LGBTQ friends in Los Angeles as they experience love, heartbreak, sex, setbacks and success. Jennifer Beals, Leisha Haily, Katherine Moennig, Arienne Mandi, Leo Sheng, Jacqueline Toboni, Rosanny Zayas, Sepideh Moafi and Jordan Hull star.

There will be lots of loose ends to tie up in Season 3. In Season 2, Bette (Beals) dealt with Tina (guest star Laurel Holloman) and Carrie's (guest star Rosie O'Donnell) engagement, and daughter Angie's (Hull) search for her birth father; Shane (Moennig) ramped up her business and her feelings for Tess (Jamie Clayton); and hot new author Alice (Hailey) wrestled with her own complicated feelings for her book editor. Meanwhile, a newly single Dani (Mandi) leaned on Gigi (Moafi) during her father's trial; Finley (Toboni) and Sophie (Zayas) tried hard to make it work despite Finley's spiraling addiction; and friends Micah (Sheng) and Maribel (Jillian Mercado) fell hard for each other. {blackbabes} Spotify’s Joe Rogan Used ‘N-Word’ 24 Times In Videos, Leading India Arie To Pull Music

Grammy-winning singer-songwrtier India Arie has posted clips today to Instagram showing Spotify host Joe Rogan using the N-word, a situation which she claimed led her to withdraw her music from the streamer.

The resurfaced clips, which were posted on YouTube at one time, were used to explain Arie's decision. She also called on followers to "delete Spotify," and used the hashtag.

"Hey, ya'll," the 46-year-old singer says in the first of a series of stories posted to her Instagram highlights account. "I'm going to leave a short message here about why I decided to ask my music be pulled off Spotify."

She followed that up with clips of Rogan using the racial slur, which Rogan used 24 times in the 23 clips. The slurs predates his $100 million deal with Spotify in 2020.

"He shouldn't even be uttering the word," Arie said. "Don't even say it, under any context. Don't say it. That's where I stand. I have always stood there."

Arie joined several musicians and podcasters who have pulled their content from Spotify. Most cited the alleged misinformation Rogan was providing on the pandemic in his podcast. Spotify has since backed Rogan's right to free speech, although it said it would monitor and warn customers about the potentially problematic content.
"I empathize with the people who are leaving for the COVID disinformation reasons – and I think that they should. I also think that Joe Rogan has the right to say whatever he wants to say," Arie said. "I also think that I have the right to say whatever I want to say."
She added that she didn't want to help generate money that funds Rogan, so she was therefore removing herself from the platform.

"Just take me off. That's where I'm at."
