{blackbabes} Titans First Look: Blackfire Suits Up!

Blackfire is looking lit for Titans Season 3.

The DC Universe-turned-HBO Max series on Thursday revealed a first look at the Tamaranean baddie's new supersuit, months after her sister Koriand'r aka Starfire (played by Anna Diop) got her own slick new look.

Damaris Lewis, who appeared in a pair of Season 2 episodes as Blackfire, was upped to series regular for Season 3 back in December 2019 — no surprise given how the DC series' sophomore run ended: As seen in the finale's bonus scene, a mom had just tucked her kids into the car outside a store when a glob of space goo splatted on the side of her neck. Moments later, said mom transformed into a smirking Blackfire — akin to how Tamaran's not-so-beloved queen used royal guardsman Faddei (Robbie Jones) as her host during an earlier visit to Earth.

As announced at September's DC FanDome event, "circumstances draw our heroes to Gotham City" in Titans Season 3, "where they will reunite with old friends and face new threats." Jason Todd (played by Curran Walters) will don the Red Hood identity "in his obsession to take down his old team" (see first photo), while the truly new faces include Barbara Gordon (to be played by actress/singer Savannah Welch) Tim Drake (I May Destroy You's Jay Lycurgo) and the yet-to-be-cast Dr. Jonathan Crane aka Scarecrow, an Arkham Asylum inmate who offers his services as a profiler for the GCPD.

Besides Walters' Jason and Diop's Kory, returning characters include Brenton Thwaites' Dick Grayson/Nightwing, Teagan Croft's Rachel Roth/Raven, Ryan Potter's Gar Logan/Beast Boy, Conor Leslie's Donna Troy/Wondergirl, Joshua Orpin's Conner Kent/Superboy, Alan Ritchson's Hank Hall/Hawk and Minka Kelly's Dawn Granger/Dove.

Titans Seasons 1 and 2 — which originally debuted on the since-reconfigured DC Universe streaming service — are now available to stream on the HBO Max, with Season 3's premiere date still TBA.

{blackbabes} Naturi Naughton To Star In ABC’s Hip-Hop Drama Pilot ‘Queens’

Power star Naturi Naughton has been tapped as a co-lead opposite Eve in Queens, ABC's hourlong pilot from Zahir McGhee, Sabrina Wind and ABC Signature.

In Queens, written by McGhee, four estranged and out-of-touch women in their 40s reunite for a chance to recapture their fame and regain the swagger they had as the Nasty Bitches – their '90s group that made them legends in the hip-hop world.

Naughton plays Jill, aka Da Thrill, a founding member of the Nasty Bitches — the group she formed with her high school friends. Da Thrill lived fast, had rugged rhymes and a troubling drug habit. Today, Jill couldn't be more put together. She's a devout Catholic living a quiet life in Montana with her husband. But everything isn't as idyllic as it seems. Jill is haunted by past secrets.

The Nasty Bitches reuniting allows Jill to escape her issues at home, but returning to her persona as Da Thrill conjures up difficult memories. But a friendship with a young rapper that she has almost nothing in common with will hilariously help Jill figure out the person she needs to be.

Naughton brings personal experience to the project — before her transition into film and television, she was a member of the Platinum selling pop trio 3LW.

Eve plays another of the four women, Brianna. McGhee and Wind executive produce.

Naughton opted to do Queens having been sought for multiple TV projects coming off six seasons of Starz's flagship drama Power and a season of the successful offshoot Power Book II: Ghost, playing Tasha St. Patrick. While Naughton is no longer a series regular on Power Book II: Ghost after Tasha went into Witness Protection in the Season 1 finale, Naughton is set to reprise her role in some fashion down the road.

A singer, songwriter and actress, Naughton is a two-time NAACP Image Award winner for her work on Power. In 2020, Naturi starred in the film Emperor, about an escaped slave who travels north and has chance encounters with Frederick Douglass and John Brown.

Naughton's credits also include Fox Searchlight's movie Notorious and MGM's remake of Fame and appearances on Mad Men and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. She also appeared on Broadway in the Tony-winning musical Hairspray for three years.

Naughton, who has been awarded by the Women in Entertainment Executive Network, The 2019 Triumph Awards, Black Women in Film Summit and The National Urban League of New York for Outstanding works in TV & Film, is repped by Gersh and Brecheen Feldman Breimer Silver & Thompson.

After signing an overall deal with HBO Max, Steven Soderbergh looks to have found his next feature film with the studio. He has come aboard to direct the New Line Max Original feature KIMI with Zoë Kravitz on board to star. The film will premiere exclusively on HBO Max. David Koepp penned the script and will produce along with Michael Polaire.

The film follows an agoraphobic tech worker who discovers recorded evidence of a violent crime during an ordinary data stream review and tries reporting it up the chain of command at her company. The film would mark the second collaboration between Warner Bros. Pictures Group, HBO Max and Soderbergh since the recent restructuring of the studio and the third between Soderbergh and HBO Max. On top of that she has received strong reviews as the star of the Hulu series High Fidelity and HBO's Big Little Lies.

Koepp is a veteran screenwriter whose screen credits include Jurassic Park, Death Becomes Her, Carlito's Way, Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man, and Panic Room.

Soderbergh is repped by Michael Sugar at Sugar23 and Jamie Feldman at Lichter Grossman Nichols. Kravitz is repped by CAA, Untitled Entertainment and Edelstein, Laird & Sobel. Koepp is repped by CAA and Myman Greenspan Fox.

{blackbabes} Netflix Lands ‘The Bluff’, With Zoe Saldana Battling Pirates in 1800s Caribbean; Frank E. Flowers Directs

Netflix won a hotly contested auction for The Bluff, a pitch that will be written as a star vehicle for Zoe Saldana, with Frank E. Flowers directing. Joe Ballarini will write the script with Flowers. Several streamers chased this one and the upfront commitment for those scribes is seven figures.

Project is about pirates in the Caribbean, but this is no family film. The drama is set in the Cayman Islands in the 1800s and Saldana plays Ercell, a Caribbean woman whose secret past is revealed when her island is invaded by vicious buccaneers. The intention is to blend visceral action and historical fiction to create a real action vehicle as the heroine fights against the atrocities committed by the pirates. There are strong roles for a second woman who is part of the vigilante campaign, and the nasty lead pirate. Saldana and Flowers previously teamed in the 2004 drama Haven.

The film will be produced by Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Mike Larocca and Angela Russo-Otstot for AGBO, alongside Mariel and Cisely Saldana for Cinestar.

Flowers has been busy as a writer, scripting an untitled LeBron James biopic at Universal and teaming with Terence Winter to write a movie about reggae icon Bob Marley for Paramount. Ballarini scripted A Babysitter's Guide to Monster Hunting for Netflix, and he's writing We Carry Kevan for Participant Media, and Skyward for 20th Century Studios. He sold his spec Cassius to Universal and is adapting the Carl Hiassen novel Chomp for Apple TV, and is developing a sports drama for Lee Daniels Television at Disney+.

Saldana has the four Avatar sequels and is filming the untitled David O Russell-directed film alongside a cast that includes Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, Anya-Taylor Joy, Rami Malek, John David Washington and Robert De Niro.

Saldana and Cinestar are repped by LBI, CAA and Morris Yorn; Flowers by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and attorney Carlos Goodman; and Ballarini by Verve and attorney Robert Goldman.

{blackbabes} ‘The Hot Zone: Anthrax’: Ian Colletti, Dawn Olivieri & Denyce Lawton To Recur In Nat Geo Series

Ian Colletti Dawn Olivieri Denyce Lawton

Ian Colletti (Preacher), Dawn Olivieri (House of Lies) and Denyce Lawton (Tyler Perry's House of Payne) are set for recurring roles opposite Daniel Dae Kim and Tony Goldwyn in The Hot Zone: Anthrax, the second installment of National Geographic's scripted anthology series. Filming is underway in Toronto.

The Hot Zone: Anthrax takes place in 2001, just weeks after 9/11, where another deadly act of terrorism rocked the United States. Letters containing anthrax were sent to unsuspecting victims in Florida, Washington, D.C. and New York. The anonymous assault claimed five lives and caused panic throughout the country. Despite interagency turf wars and many false leads, an unlikely team of scientists, FBI agents and government departments slowly closed in on a shocking prime suspect.

Colletti will play Agent Chris Moore, a newbie to the bureau with a dry sense of humor. A graduate of Quantico and is eager to learn under a seasoned agent, although a microbiologist wouldn't have been his top choice as a mentor.

Olivieri portrays Dani Toretti (fka Dani Toscano), goes by "Dani." Loves it whenever she walks in a door and everyone is expecting a man. She's among the first agents on the ground at the 2001 Capitol Hill anthrax attack. With a Masters in psychology, she's an FBI Special Agent who gets pulled onto the Counterterrorism Unit after 9/11. And, as a behaviorist, she's tough enough to maneuver the boys club in the bureau, but grounded enough that her instincts point her in the right direction.

Lawton is Sheila Willis. Graduated top three out of Texas, and is a pharmaceutical rep who lobbies on Capitol Hill. She has put more into her career than personal life, and has dated FBI Agent Ryker off-and-on. After 9/11, everything feels a little stronger, deeper, and more unsettled, which has her rethinking her priorities.

Cast also includes Harry Hamlin and Dylan Baker.

Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson serve as executive producers and showrunners. Scott Free Production's Ridley Scott, David W. Zucker and Jordan Sheehan are executive producers. Lynda Obst is an executive producer. Richard Preston is a co-executive producer. The Hot Zone: Anthrax is produced by 20th Television and Scott Free Productions.

Colletti is coming off four seasons on AMC's Preacher. He recently recurred on Showtime's Billions, and guest starred on Lincoln Rhyme for NBC. On the film side, he has starred in numerous indie projects over the last several years, most recently in Netflix's Mohawk. Colletti is repped by CESD, Industry Entertainment and the Nord Group.

Olivieri is best known for her work opposite Don Cheadle in House of Lies and David Duchovny in Californication both for Showtime. She recently recurred on CBS' SEAL Team, and prior to that, played opposite Will Smith in David Ayer's Bright. Olivieri is repped by Thruline and Talentworks.

Lawton is known for her role as Dana on Tyler Perry's House of Payne. She recently guest-starred on Chicago PD. Lawton is repped by Jacqueline Kim at Innovative Artists.

Kim posted a pic today on Instagram, the first day on-set in Toronto.

{blackbabes} ‘Power Book IV: Force’: Lili Simmons, Gabrielle Ryan, Tommy Flanagan Among 8 Cast In Starz’s Series

Power Book IV Cast
z

Starz has set its main cast for Power Book IV: Force, the third installment in the Power universe. Lili Simmons (Banshee, Ray Donovan), Gabrielle Ryan (The Haves and the Have Nots, Bonding), Isaac Keys (Get Shorty, The Oath), Hightown alum Shane Harper, Kris D. Lofton (Ballers, Empire), Anthony Fleming III (Prison Break, The Beast), Lucien Cambric (Chicago P.D., The Chi) and Tommy Flanagan (Sons of Anarchy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2) are set as series regulars opposite Joseph Sikora in the series from Courtney Kemp and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson and Lionsgate Television.

Power Book IV: Force centers around Tommy Egan, played by Joseph Sikora, after he cuts ties and puts New York in his rearview mirror for good.

Kemp and Jackson will executive produce alongside Mark Canton, and series creator and showrunner Robert Munic (Vital Signs, The Cleaner). Lionsgate Television produces the series for Starz.

Keys plays Diamond, a gentle giant with truthful eyes and a body made of granite with defensive precision, a trait drilled into him during a 15-year sentence. Before Diamond got locked up, he was the young head of Chicago's most promising crew that was taking over the city. In his short time at the helm, he created a tactical drug running outfit respected by all of Chicago's crime families. He spent his time in prison reading the classics, educating himself on everything from history to literature to philosophy. Now that he's out, Diamond plans on taking the reins back from his crew's interim leader — his younger brother.

Simmons portrays Claudia 'Claud' Flynn, the only daughter to the largest kingpin in Chicago. Astute doesn't begin to describe her – her intellect is a mixture of Ivy League lecture halls and Chicago street-smarts. She is as brilliant as a politician and as blunt as a pipe wrench to the face. Claud doesn't need the green light or permission to set things in motion, she is the fire starter and the one person nobody in Chicago should ever count out. In a male-dominated business, Claud is determined to carve out her own path and one that might save her family in the end.

Ryan is Gloria, a razor-sharp and stunning former Marine carving her own path in Chicago. She's passionate, fiery and beholden to no man. Out of the small kitchen in the back of her bar, she pumps out Michelin-level, Jamaican inspired dishes. Her clientele is a revolving door of Irish mobsters looking to move in on her real estate. This doesn't stop Gloria's hustle and dream of one day owning her own restaurant and being free from under the watchful eye of the crime family that she's entangled with. A chance encounter with Tommy quickly causes a seismic shift in the lives of those around her that only she can unravel.

Harper plays Vic Flynn, the heir apparent to Chicago's largest crime family – a prince who leads with his heart as much as his fists. Vic resents the fact that his father has mapped out his entire life for him – both in business and in love. Vic can roll with Chicago's wealthiest socialites just as easily as he can get down with Chicago's heaviest dealers. Realizing his father has taken a shine to Tommy, Vic will fight to regain control of his rightful position at any and all costs. Looking to move his family's business forward and bury old beefs, Vic's allegiance to his family is put to the test and where he comes out on it will impact the entire city of Chicago's POWER structure.

Lofton portrays Jenard Sampson. Not a traditional student, but a shining star who was gifted from birth, Jenard was accepted to Brown University within days of his older brother Diamond being sentenced to 15 years. Jenard parked his ambitions of academia and took the reins of one of Chicago's largest crews. Buffeted by the benefits of Diamond being his brother and keeper, he took power of the organization with an unbridled ability of a CEO along with the wild energy to end anybody that crosses him.

Flemming III plays JP Gibbs, a gifted jazz musician who toured several continents, developing a rich worldliness that comes through in his swagger and collage of diverse tattoos. JP owns and operates a blues club with his ailing father that has been the target of several attacks by local gang members. As rich as JP's life is, he still carries the pain of never having had a mother in his life and having a son he has no relationship with. JP's world is thrown off its axis when he crosses paths with Tommy.

Cambric is Darnell 'D-Mac' McDowell, a young man who has been raised by the streets of Chicago's Southside. Independent, fiercely loyal and completely unflinching when called upon to represent his crew, D-Mac is still a kid at heart looking for someone to take care of him. After a run in with Tommy proves to be more than a fluke, D-Mac looks to Tommy as he hits a crossroads in his life that can completely upend his future.

Flanagan is Walter Flynn, the head of the Irish crime family in Chicago. Despite living a life of immense prosperity in his castle on the lake, he longs for the way things used to be. Walter believes that without community and family, there is no tradition, and his deeply held code of honor bleeds into every aspect of his life. As he ushered his family into the twenty-first century, Walter quickly saw the criminal organization he built facing threats he never accounted for.

Simmons television credits include HBO's Westworld, the first season of HBO's True Detective, five seasons of Cinemax's Banshee and a major arc on Ray Donovan. Her feature credits include the independent western Bone Tomahawk, thriller Good Match, and Matthew Lillard's Fat Kid Rules the World. Simmons recently wrapped production on the independent thriller Conductor. She's repped by Paradigm, Kate Linden Management and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher.

{blackbabes} ‘One Night in Miami’, ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ Lead Nominations For 21st Annual Black Reel Awards

The Black Reel Awards (BRAs), an annual event that recognizes the excellence of African-Americans, as well as the cinematic achievements of the African diaspora in the global film industry, has unveiled the nominees for its 21st annual awards ceremony. The event, hosted by the Foundation for the Augmentation of African-Americans in Film (FAAAF), will take place on April 11 virtually across several media platforms.

Leading the pack with 15 nominations is Amazon's One Night in Miami, the directorial debut from Oscar and past Black Reel Award winner, Regina King, who also received a nom for Outstanding Director. The pic also picked up nominations for Outstanding Picture, Outstanding Actor (Kingsley Ben-Adir), Outstanding Supporting Actor (Leslie Odom, Jr. and Aldis Hodge), and Outstanding Screenplay (Kemp Powers).

Warner Bros' Judas and the Messiah is not too far behind with 12 nominations including Outstanding Picture, Outstanding Actor (Lakeith Stanfield), Outstanding Supporting Actor (Daniel Kaluuya), Outstanding Supporting Actress (Dominique Fishback), Outstanding Screenplay (Will Berson and Shaka King), and Outstanding Director (King).

The late Chadwick Boseman, the second actor to receive acting nominations posthumously, is up for Outstanding Actor for his performance in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. The George C. Wolfe-directed Netflix film earned a total of ten nominations.

For the first in BRAs history, the majority of the nominated directors are women. Notedly, The Forty-Year-Old Version helmer Radha Blanks received seven nominations for her debut film, including Outstanding Director, becoming the most-nominated individual in Black Reel Awards history. In addition, Dawn Porter becomes the first director to earn multiple nominations in the Outstanding Documentary category for both John Lewis: Good Trouble and The Way I See It, while Pixar's Soul becomes the first animated film to earn a Screenplay nomination and the second animated film to earn an Outstanding Picture nom.

"Last year was a historic year in film, if for no other reason that there were more films released than ever before by Black filmmakers, featuring a tremendous amount of quality performances by a group of tireless creatives, who overcame unique challenges to create a group of memorable and indelible images," said Black Reel Awards founder Tim Gordon. "We look forward to creatives continuing to tell our stories and we congratulate all of this year's talented nominees.
