{blackbabes} Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’ breaks Spotify record

https://nypost.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2020/12/mariah-carey-36.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=1280

All they want for Christmas is Mimi.

It's no surprise that Mariah Carey's fans love her perennial holiday hit, "All I Want for Christmas Is You," which again topped Billboard's Hot 100 just last week. But now the 1994 single has set a Spotify record for most single-day streams: a whopping 17.223 million, Carey announced on Christmas Day on Twitter.

"WOW," she wrote, along with a string of emojis including hearts, Christmas trees and snowflakes. "I know people think I'm making 'coin' (lil' secret: artists make very little from streams) but the real reason I'm sitting here in astonishment & gratitude is seeing the joy this little song I wrote brings to people. THANK YOU & MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!"

The glam chanteuse, 50, celebrated the news while reposting a tweet from Chart Data, which tracks information from Billboard, Soundscan and other sources.

Christmas queen Carey had already kicked off her favorite month with a festive singing collaboration with Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson in "Mariah Carey's Magical Christmas Special" on Apple TV+. But she has long embraced — and perfected — the holiday.

"I think it's just that longing that I had as a child, that I always wanted things to be perfect for the holidays … And they never were," she recently told Elle magazine. "It was always somebody ruining the moment, always these dysfunctional family members who came around and foiled everything."

Along her journey toward a more joyeaux Noël, Mimi has been memed a lot — out of love and respect, of course — by fans who know that she does actually make some Christmas cash from the song, which has reportedly hauled in more than $2 million in Spotify royalties alone.

That probably makes up for her disappointment with fans' off-market Carey Christmas ornaments.

{blackbabes} Riverdale to Write Vanessa Morgan's Real-Life Pregnancy Into Season 5 — What's It Mean for Cheryl and Toni?

Riverdale Toni Pregnant Vanessa Morgan

There's a bundle of joy headed to Riverdale this season… and the mother is not who you'd expect.

The CW teen drama will be incorporating series regular Vanessa Morgan's real-life pregnancy into the show in Season 5, the actress revealed in an Instagram post on Saturday. Announcing that she's headed to maternity leave, Morgan — who has played Toni on Riverdale since Season 2 — said she's "feeling grateful to my showrunner & producers for being so accommodating & writing my pregnancy into the show!… Also proud of my body for allowing me to still work almost 9 months preggo."

The news may come as a surprise to Riverdale fans, though, since Toni is currently dating Madelaine Petsch's Cheryl Blossom, as of the end of Season 4. Does the fact that Toni's pregnant mean she and Cheryl are headed for splitsville? Well, not necessarily: Riverdale will be incorporating a time jump of several years into Season 5, so maybe Toni and Cheryl eventually decide to get married and start a family together? Or maybe she serves as a surrogate for a friend who wants a baby (like Kevin, perhaps)? The possibilities are endless, really.

One thing's for sure: We'll find out when Riverdale returns for Season 5 on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 8/7c on The CW.

Lamon-Archey-GG-Townson

Lamon Archey (Days of Our Lives) and GG Townson (Everybody Hates Chris) are set for recurring roles on the upcoming third season of the CW's All American drama series.

Season 2 of All American found Spencer James (Daniel Ezra), now a football State Champion, with a tough decision to make. Does he stay in Beverly Hills and play for Coach Billy Baker (Taye Diggs)? Or does he move back home to South LA, reunite with his mother, Grace (Karimah Westbrook), brother, Dillon (Jalyn Hall), and play for his father, Corey (Chad Coleman) – the new head coach for the South Crenshaw Chargers? Archey returns to All American as a recurring after guest-starring in the Season 2 finale. Townson will play Lil Jewel, a singer working on her upcoming album and another one of JP's artists. While she can come across as a little self-serving, there is much more to her than meets the eye.

{blackbabes} Naomi Ackie Lands Role Of Whitney Houston In Sony TriStar’s ‘I Wanna Dance With Somebody’

BAFTA winner and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker actress Naomi Ackie has notched the role of Whitney Houston in Sony/TriStar's biopic I Wanna Dance With Somebody, which will be directed by Stella Meghie.

"We spent the better part of the last year in an exhaustive search for an actress who could embody Whitney Houston," Meghie said in a statement. "Naomi Ackie impressed us at every stage of the process. I was moved by her ability to capture the stage presence of a global icon while bringing humanity to her interior life."

The pic, which is being made with the blessing of the Houston estate, is being written by Oscar nominee Anthony McCarten.

Deadline first broke news about the project which is being produced by McCarten's Muse of Fire Productions; Pat Houston (the 2018 Kevin Macdonald documentary Whitney) on behalf of the Houston estate; legendary music producer Clive Davis; Larry Mestel on behalf of Primary Wave Music; and Denis O'Sullivan (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Jeff Kalligheri (Submergence), who are also financing via Compelling Pictures. Primary Wave Music is a partner of the Whitney Houston estate. The key with this Houston project is that the estate has signed off on the screenplay, which grants the film to reproduce all the Houston hits. Such was key with getting Bohemian Rhapsody off the ground. Lifetime's 2014 TV movie Whitney, directed by Angela Bassett, didn't have consent of the Houston estate and thus was not able to reproduce all the hit singles in the multi-award-winning singer's canon.

Ackie won a BAFTA for her role as Bonnie in the second season of Netflix's cult series The End Of The F***Ing World. She also won a British Independent Film Award as Most Promising Newcomer in 2017 for her performance as Anna in Lady Macbeth. Last year, she played Jannah in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the final instalment in the Skywalker saga, and she just recently was seen in Education, Part 4 of Steve McQueen's acclaimed anthology series Small Axe. Ackie next will take on a leading role in heist musical The Score with Will Poulter and Johnny Flynn.

{blackbabes} Empire Spinoff Starring Taraji P. Henson as Cookie Not Moving Forward at Fox

Empire Ratings Season 5

Empire's Cookie has crumbled, unfortunately: A planned spinoff of the hit drama with Taraji P. Henson reprising her role as Cookie is not moving forward at Fox, according to our sister site Variety.

News of the spinoff first surfaced in July, with Empire co-creator Danny Strong serving as co-showrunner on the potential series alongside Empire vets Yolanda Lawrence and Stacy Littlejohn. The series would have centered on the next chapter for Henson's Cookie, following the Empire series finale, which aired in April and capped a six-season run on Fox. But the Cookie-centered spinoff is still being shopped to ABC and Hulu, Deadline reports. (It's produced by 20th Television, which is now owned by Disney, under a first-look deal with Henson.)

Henson earned a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice award along with a pair of Emmy nominations for her work as fierce matriarch Loretha "Cookie" Lyon on Empire. She's set to launch a talk show about mental health on Facebook Watch called Peace of Mind With Taraji, and also hosted last month's American Music Awards on ABC. Her other TV credits include Person of Interest, The Division and Boston Legal.

{blackbabes} ‘First Wives Club’: Michelle Mitchenor Joins As New Series Regular, Four Cast In Recurring Roles

Michelle Mitchenor

Michelle Mitchenor (Lethal Weapon) is set as a new series regular opposite Ryan Michelle Bathe, Jill Scott and Michelle Buteau in the upcoming second season of BET+'s The First Wives Club. Additionally, Gary Dourdan (CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), Jordan Carlos (The Drew Barrymore Show), Essence Atkins (Ambitions) and Mikhail Keize (She Had To Ask) join in recurring roles.

Developed by Girls Trip co-writer Tracy Oliver, The First Wives Club series, like the movie that starred Diane Keaton, Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn, is set in New York City. It follows Ari (Bathe), Bree (Buteau) and Hazel (Scott), who band together after their marriages fall apart and find strength in their sisterhood — and of course a little revenge.

Mitchenor will play Jayla Wright. Intelligent, confident, a first rate attorney hungry for a big case, Jayla is a sorority sister of Bree, Ari and Hazel. On Ari's recommendation, Kat hires Jayla to represent entrepreneur Maxine Hart in her high profile divorce case. Jayla impresses both Kat and Maxine with her sense of humor, her understanding of Maxine's state of mind, and her fearlessness at facing off against a formidable legal opponent.

(

Dourdan will recur as Dr. Malcolm Reynard. Salt and pepper goatee gorgeous, intelligent, professional, with a sense of humor, Dr. Reynard is the new hospital administrator, and he and Bree have an instant spark. Impressed by Bree professionally and personally, Dr. Reynard wants to throw Bree's name into the ring as the new Chief of Surgery–and he'd like to take her out to dinner to talk it over.

Carlos will play Curtis. Nerdy, persistent, smart, straightforward, Curtis is Hazel's assistant. Efficient and on top of things, but frustrated by Hazel, Curtis has been doing everything in his power to keep Hazel's business affairs in order while she gives him the run-around every time he needs her to sign off on something. Curtis makes it very clear to Hazel that she's behind on everything she promised to deliver to Sony–who signs her checks AND Curtis' — and that she hired him to help her whip her business into shape.

Atkins will portray Maxine Hart, a self-made millionaire going through a messy divorce. She is quite the handful for Jayla. Chic, aspirational, very successful, Maxine owns a business that discreetly provides escorts for celebrities and high income clientele looking to have a little fun on the side, and she's made a fortune. Humiliated and outraged when her husband has a process server serve her divorce papers during her TED Talk, Maxine is frazzled and upset and out for his blood. She meets with her lawyer, Jayla, and Kat, and is infuriated to learn that she's going to be giving her husband a sizable chunk of her hard-earned money

Keize is Nigel, Hazel's younger, Jamaican boyfriend she has met during her tour. He is a huge distraction for Hazel, making Curtis' job hard and Hazel's goal to get her label off the ground even harder.

Oliver writes the series and executive produces with Karen Rosenfelt, Scott Rudin, a producer on the First Wives Club movie. and Tony Hernandez of JAX Media. Paramount TV produces.

Mitchenor is coming off Lethal Weapon on Fox. She also starred in Chi-Raq opposite Wesley Snipes, and was the lead in the A&E drama pilot The Infamous from Anthony Hemingway. She's repped by A3 Artists Agency, Luber Roklin Entertainment, and Brecheen, Feldman, Breimer, Silver & Thompson.

{blackbabes} Taraji P. Henson Making Feature Film Directorial Debut With Bron Studios’ ‘Two-Faced’

Oscar nominated and Golden Globe winning actress Taraji P. Henson is making her feature directorial debut the Bron Studios' drama Two-Faced in which she'll also star.

Two-Faced, written by Cat Wilkins, follows Joy, a Black high school senior whose chances to attend the college of her dreams are threatened by her wildly popular and charismatic school principal, Jerald, after she confronts him with evidence of his racist past. With the help of her friends, Joy sets out to expose Jerald for who he truly is but quickly learns that he is not above waging all-out-war against the students trying to take him down. Henson will play Gina Robinson, Joy's mother.

Wilkins recently graduated from the MFA Screenwriting Program at UCLA. Her Two-Faced screenplay won first place in the feature comedy category at the 2020 UCLA Screenwriters Showcase. Henson and her TPH Entertainment will produce with Aaron L. Gilbert (Bombshell, Joker, Fences) on behalf of Bron, Tim Story (Ride Along franchise, Think Like a Man franchise, Tom & Jerry) on behalf of The Story Company and Sharla Sumpter Bridgett (Coach Carter, Wild Hogs). EPs are Wilkins, Christine Conley and Trent Hubbard.

Said Henson: "After two decades spent in front of the camera, I'm thrilled to finally jump behind it for my feature directorial debut! What first attracted me to this project was Joy – she is the character I needed to see in films growing up, but never had. It's important that stories be told from a woman's point of view and partnering with Bron Studios and the amazingly talented Tim Story – both who use their platforms to help elevate women and people of color – feels like the perfect match. I can't wait to bring this hilariously heartfelt script by Cat Wilkins to life!"

Added Gilbert: "Taraji is an important voice in the world and Bron is thrilled to support her directorial debut, of a script from Cat Wilkins, that through its comedic elements examines race and culture in America. We also look forward to working with Taraji's long-time collaborator Tim Story and the rest of the team behind the film."

Said Story: "I could not be more excited to support one of the most talented people I have ever known. Taraji and I have done three movies together and I knew it was only a matter of time before she would make this leap to directing and I am honored to produce this film along with Bron Studios. Taraji is like family to me and I cannot wait for everyone to see her directorial vision of this hilarious script by Cat Wilkins brought to the screen."

BRON Releasing and UTA Independent Film Group will oversee film sales and distribution.

Henson won a Golden Globe in 2016 in the Best Actress TV Series Drama category for her turn on Fox's Empire. She was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Oscars in 2009 for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. She's also a 2017 SAG Ensemble winner for the feature Hidden Figures. Henson directed the 2020 episode "Come Undone" of Empire. Her Executive Producer feature credits include No Good Deed, Proud Mary and What Men Want.

She is represented by M88, UTA, Ziffren Brittenham and The Lede Company. Wilkins is represented by UTA and Echo Lake Entertainment. Story and The Story Company are repped by UTA, Ziffren Brittenham and The Collins Jackson Agency.

{blackbabes} Skydance Television Developing P. Djéli Clark’s ‘Ring Shout’ With Kasi Lemmons As Showrunner, Kiki Layne To Star

Skydance Television has acquired the rights to P. Djéli Clark's novella Ring Shout in a competitive situation. Kasi Lemmons (Harriet, Eve's Bayou) is set to serve as showrunner and will write and direct the television series based on the historical fantasy while Kiki Layne (The Old Guard, If Beale Street Could Talk) is set to star.

The studio will develop Ring Shout, which follows an otherworldly evil that has risen in the 1920s South in the form of monsters who take up residence within the bodies of people filled with hate — namely the Ku Klux Klan. D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation is helping to swell the Klan's ranks and the monsters are drinking deep from the darkest thoughts of racism.

Across the nation, they spread fear and violence. But even monsters can die. Standing in their way is a young Black woman, Maryse Boudreaux, and her two friends and fellow resistance fighters – a foul-mouthed sharpshooter and a Harlem Hellfighter. Armed with blade, bullet and bomb, they hunt their hunters and send the Klan's demons straight to Hell. But something even bigger is brewing in Macon, and the war on Hell is about to heat up. And Maryse, haunted by events of her past, is the only one who can put a stop to it all.

Based on the synopsis, this new series is definitely giving off Lovecraft Country energy — and we all know how that became a TV obsession for audiences. Clark, Lemmons, Layne will also serve as executive producers alongside Marc Evans, Matt Jackson and Skydance Television's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bill Bost.

In addition to the groundbreaking Eve's Bayou and Harriet, Lemmons also directed episodes of Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker, Luke Cage and Shots Fired. She also created the stage adaptation of Charles Blow's New York Times bestselling memoir Fire Shut up in My Bones along with Academy-Award nominated composer Terrence Blanchard, for the Opera Theater of Saint Louis.

Layne recently starred alongside Charlize Theron in the Skydance-produced Netflix action pic The Old Guard. She starred in Barry Jenkins' adaptation of James Baldwin's If Beale Street Could Talk and was seen in HBO's Native Son, starring opposite Ashton Sanders, Margaret Qualley and Nick Robinson. Layne can also be seen opposite Julianne Moore in Luca Guadagnino's short film The Staggering Girl that premiered in Cannes last May. Up next for the actress is  Amazon's Coming 2 America She is currently filming the Olivia Wilde-directed psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling.

P. Djéli Clark has also written The Black God's Drums and The Haunting of Tram Car 015. His short stories have appeared in online speculative venues and print anthologies, and his debut novel, A Master of Djinn, will be published in May 2021 by Tor.com.

Ring Shout is the latest priority development in the works at Skydance Television. The studio is currently working on a spy adventure series starring and executive produced by Arnold Schwarzenegger from creator Nick Santora; a semi-autobiographical comedy-drama from Leawaa Nasserdeen; and Hotel del Luna from Alison Schapker. Skydance Television has entered into overall deals with producers David S. Goyer, Alison Schapker and Nick Santora as well as showrunners Olivia Purnell and Lewaa Nasserdeen. Skydance's television slate includes Grace and Frankie, Altered Carbon, Condor, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, Foundation and Jack Reacher.

{blackbabes} Issa Rae & La La Anthony To Produce Horror Comedy ‘Juju’ At Universal; Angelica Nwandu To Pen, Thembi Banks To Direct

Issa Rae and La La Anthony want to scare the living daylights out of you and make you laugh at the same time with Juju.

The Insecure and Power vets are executive producing the upcoming horror comedy for Universal Pictures, I've learned. In the early stages, there are not a lot of plot specifics. However, it will be based on an original concept by Angelica Nwandu, founder of Instagram-based info hub The Shade Room and a Sundance fellow, who will write the script.

Juju will be the studio feature directorial debut for Thembi Banks, who has been a director on Rae's Insecure, Frankie Shaw's SMILF and a Sundance alum herself. Earlier this year, Banks was in the midst of helming Young, Wild, Free for Macro, SK Global and Baron Davis, but that feature project was put on pause due to the coronavirus pandemic. Longtime Rae partner Deniese Davis will also produce Juju, with HooRae's SVP Development Sara Rastogi overseeing for the busy banner. Universal's Senior EVP Production Erik Baiers will be the studio's point person on the genre hybrid project.

A seasoned producer with credits including the BET documentary Killer Curves and the Tony-nominated Eclipsed starring Lupita Nyong'o, Anthony stewarded Juju from almost from its incarnation to its studio perch, I hear.

Rae is repped by UTA, 3 Arts Entertainment and Hansen, Jacobson. Anthony is represented by UTA, Untitled Entertainment and lawyer Renee Farrell. Banks is also represented by UTA as well as Rain Management Group and Gang, Tyre.

The multi-platform maverick Nwandu, who co-penned the drama Night Comes On that the NEXT Innovator Award at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, is repped by WME and attorney Poya Ghasri.
