{blackbabes} Rihanna wants to go to college

Rihanna shines bright like a diamond onstage, but she wants to shine in the classroom, too.

The Grammy-winning singer accepted Harvard's 2017 Humanitarian of the Year Award on Tuesday, and shared her desire to get a college degree.

"You don't have to be rich to be a humanitarian. You don't have to be rich to help somebody," she said during a speech at the university. "You don't gotta be famous. You don't even have to be college-educated. I mean, I wish I was … especially today."

As the crowd laughed, the 29-year-old declared, "It's true, I might come back."

Rihanna's Humanitarian of the Year Award is based on of her involvement with a number of charitable causes.

She built a state-of-the-art center for oncology and nuclear medicine to diagnose and treat breast cancer in her home nation of Barbados.

She also created the Clara Lionel Foundation scholarship program — named for her grandmother who died from cancer — for students from the Caribbean who attend college in the US.

Rihanna also supports the Global Partnership for Education and Global Citizen Project, providing children with access to education in more than 60 developing countries.

"When I was 5 or 6 years old, I remember watching TV and I would see these commercials and I was watching other children suffer in other parts of the world," she said on Tuesday. "You know? The commercials where you could give 25 cents and save a child's life. I would think to myself … I wonder how many 25 cents I could save up to save all of the kids in Africa and I would say to myself, 'When I grow up and get rich, I'm going to save kids all over the world.' I just didn't know I'd be in the position to do that when I was a teenager."

{blackbabes} Viola Davis first black star to win Oscar, Emmy and Tony for acting

Viola Davis won the best supporting actress Oscar Sunday night for her performance in Denzel Washington's "Fences."

"You know there's one place where all the people with the greatest potential are gathered, and that's the graveyard," Davis began her acceptance speech with fervor. "People ask me all the time — What kind of stories do you want to tell? And I say, exhume those bodies. Exhume those stories."

She continued, "I became an artist and thank God I did because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life."

The actress then began a long list of thanks with August Wilson, ("… who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people") and Washington ("O captain, my captain… Thank you for putting two entities in the driver's seat — August and God. They served you well.").

Voice cracking with emotion, Davis thanks her parents, sister, husband and daughter. With the award, she became the first black actor to win an Oscar, Emmy and Tony award for acting.

It was perhaps the evening's safest bet, as Davis had dominated the precursor circuit, winning 20-plus critical honors, the Screen Actors Guild prize, the Golden Globe, the Critics' Choice award and the British Academy award as well.

After a surprising loss for her performance in "The Help" five years ago, a narrative of Davis being due had no doubt coalesced. But Davis's performance was powerful and deserving regardless. After all, she already won a Tony Award for the same role, albeit in the lead category. She in fact becomes the second person in history to win a Tony and an Oscar for the same role but in different categories. The first was "The King and I" star Yul Brynner.

{blackbabes} Oscars 2017: Viola Davis Wins Best Supporting Actress for Fences

Viola Davis Oscar Speech

She went in the odds-on favorite and came out a winner.

As predicted by Oscar prognosticators far and wide, Viola Davis took home the Best Supporting Actress trophy at Sunday's 89th annual Academy Awards for her raw, visceral work in Fences.

In her emotional acceptance speech, Davis said, "There's one place that all the people with the greatest potential are gathered, and that's the graveyard. People ask me all the time, 'What kind of stories do you wan to tell, Viola?' and I say, "Exhume those bodies. Exhume those stories. The stories of the people who dreamed big and never saw those dreams to fruition. People who fell in love and lost.' I became an artist, and thank God I did, because we are the only profession that celebrates what it means to live a life. So here's to [Fences screenwriter/playwright] August Wilson, who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people."

Heading into Sunday's ceremony, the How to Get Away With Murder actress had already triumphed at the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards and the BAFTAs.

This was Davis' third Oscar nomination and first win; she had previously been nominated for her work in 2009's Doubt and 2012's The Help.

{blackbabes} Jay Z and Beyoncé cause frenzy at Weinstein pre-Oscar party

Jay Z and Beyoncé made a surprise appearance at Harvey Weinstein's pre-Oscars party at the Montage Beverly Hills on Saturday night.

Beyoncé, who's pregnant with twins, was wearing a glam, body-hugging dark green dress. The hip hop mogul and his "Lemonade" singer wife arrived at the event during a live performance by Cynthia Erivo, Chris Jackson and Corbin Bleu of songs from "Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda's "In the Heights."

Miranda, who's up for an Oscar, had introduced the "In the Heights" routine.

But since Jay Z and Beyoncé arrived in the middle of the medley, quick-witted Weinstein then had the singers stay on stage and perform "the first five minutes" again after they'd already brought down the house once. "The Color Purple" Broadway star Erivo and the others then launched back into their performance again to the delight of the starry crowd that also included "Lion" stars Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman, Kelsey Grammer, Diane Warren, David Foster, Salman Rushdie, Matthew Morrison, Weinstein's wife Georgina Chapman, Zac Posen, Egar Ramirez and Starwood Capital's Barry Sternlicht.

The Weinstein Company is making a film of Miranda's 2008 hit Broadway musical "In the Heights," with "Color Purple" theater producer Scott Sanders. Weinstein revealed from the stage on Saturday night that Jay Z will also be a producer on the musical film. In September, Jay Z and Weinstein signed a first-look movie deal.

The luxe party was to toast "Lion," which has six Oscar nominations. Weinstein noted he and Kidman have made nine films together.

Nicole Scherzinger and "Lion" composers — Dustin O'Halloran and Volker Bertelmann (a k a Hauschka) also performed at the luxe bash.

{blackbabes} Janelle Monae, more honored at Essence pre-Oscar gala

Actresses Aja Naomi King and Yara Shahidi quoted James Baldwin. "Insecure" creator Issa Rae shared awkward memories of her first trip down a Hollywood red carpet. And singer-songwriter Janelle Monae, who makes her acting debut in two films nominated for best picture at Sunday's Oscars, insisted black women "have a right to have our stories told."

Essence magazine recognized these four young entertainers Thursday at its 10th anniversary Black Women in Hollywood gala, which is set to air as a special on the Oprah Winfrey Network on March 5.

"Stories written, directed, produced and acted by black women are necessary," Common said as he and actor Kofi Siriboe opened the program at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

"This event is a reminder that we are here," host Gabrielle Union said. "Regardless of whether or not anyone sees us."

The need to be seen, heard and valued was a theme of the evening, as pioneering artists such as Debbie Allen and Viola Davis lauded the next generation of storytellers, who in turn thanked them for paving the way.

Allen described Rae as "an OBG: an original black girl." The 32-year-old writer, director and star of HBO's "Insecure" listed Allen among the many black women who inspired her. Rae said the choreographer, director and producer has "been goals since I was a child, then I realized I can't dance so I was satisfied just being a fan."

Tracee Ellis Ross said she and Shahidi, her TV daughter on "black-ish," are "kindred souls from different eras."

Shahidi said she sometimes wonders what she's doing "in beautiful designer clothes while the world is reeling backward."

"What I am I doing to contribute to the world around me?" she said. "I'm fortunate because you all have taught me by example what the role of the arts is: to disrupt, to remold and to create."

Past Essence honorees Shonda Rhimes and Diahann Carroll were among the guests Thursday. Other past recipients include Davis, Allen, Ross and Union, along with Oprah Winfrey, Halle Berry, Cicely Tyson and Ava DuVernay, who appears on the cover of the magazine's March issue.

Pharrell Williams, who's up for an Oscar as a producer of "Hidden Figures," presented an award to Monae, a star of that film and "Moonlight." He described her as "the definition of a pluralist."

"It's on another level," Williams said. "Like, you're really talented, sis."

Monae spoke passionately about the autonomy and agency of black women.

"The world must continue to know that we are not your expectations," the 31-year-old entertainer said. "We have been the backbones of communities from the ghettos to Silicon Valley. We're not monolithic. We are multidimensional. And we have a right to have our stories told."

She noted that "Hidden Figures," which stars three black women, has brought it more than $140 million so far.

Davis introduced King, her co-star on "How to Get Away With Murder," by praising the honesty and openness she brings to her performances.

"That is the goal," Davis said. "That is the gift."

The 32-year-old actress responded with a poetic speech that moved several in the room, including Union, to tears. She talked about struggling to overcome an inner critic that tells her she's unworthy and doesn't belong.

"But in order for me to survive in this industry and in this world, in order for me to thrive, I have to stop believing that the root of my talent is a tree growing in someone else's yard, as if the fruit it bears doesn't belong to me," she said. "We are living in a world where we watch our culture being consumed and are left starving for ourselves, and I don't want to be hungry anymore."

{blackbabes} ‘Berlin Station’: Keke Palmer Joins Epix Drama Series For Season 2

Fashion, Beauty, Celebrity Portraiture

Keke Palmer (Grease Live, Scream Queens) is set as a series regular on the second season of Epix's drama series Berlin Station.

Created by Olen Steinhauer, the contemporary spy drama takes a look at the activity of a CIA office on a global stage in the midst of an investigation into a now-famous whistleblower. The series follows Daniel Miller (Richard Armitage), a new arrival at Berlin's CIA station who is on a clandestine mission to uncover the source of the Thomas Shaw leaks. Richard Jenkins, Michelle Forbes, Rhys Ifans, Leland Orser and Tamlyn Tomita also star.

Palmer will play April Lewis, the newest and youngest case officer assigned to Berlin Station on her first field assignment after making her mark as an analyst at Langley. With a bracing combination of millennial intrepidity and old-fashioned sass, April brings a new-guard mentality often at odds with her old-guard colleagues in a system struggling to preserve its besieged identity. But she is no less determined to make her mark in Berlin as she did back home at headquarters.

Season 2 of Berlin Station begins production next month. Steinhauer executive produces with Bradford Winters, who also serves as showrunner. Eric Roth, along with Steve Golin, Kerry Kohansky-Roberts, Keith Redmon and Luke Rivett from Anonymous Content also executive produce. The series is produced by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content.

Palmer played Zayday on Seasons 1 and 2 of Fox's Scream Queens and starred as Marty on Emmy-winning Grease Live, also on Fox. She also made Broadway history recently as the first African American and youngest actress to star in Rodgers and Hammerstein's iconic 1957 musical, Cinderella. Her TV credits include The Trip to Bountiful, cable miniseries Full Circle, CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, and a six-episode arc on the second season of Masters of Sex.

{blackbabes} Court Tosses Tatyana Ali Lawsuit Claiming ‘The Real’ Was Her Idea

The Los Angeles Superior Court got real today with former Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air star Tatyana Ali, tossing the actress' claims that Warner Bros and Telepictures pilfered her idea for syndicated daytime talk show The Real.

In dismissing Ali's lawsuit, the court ruled that the trade secret laws upon which the actress made part of her claim does not protect ideas. Information that would be protected as trade secrets — formulas, methods, techniques and the like — were not claimed by Ali.

Ali filed her suit last July, claiming that she pitched a talk show to Warner Bros. and Telepictures back in 2012, her idea being a celebrity-hosted program aimed at viewers on "the younger side of the mid-life/mid-career female population." The show would have "featured a variety of contemporary discussion topics in a relaxed and informal setting."

The Real premiered in July 2013 on Fox-owned stations, featuring co-hosts Adrienne Bailon, Tamar Braxton, Loni Love, Jeannie Mai and Tamara Mowry. "With a great deal of disappointment and complete disbelief," Ali's suit said, the actress "witnessed [her] concept come to life on major network television at the hands of the Defendant Corporations."

Today's ruling noted that not only did Ali "voluntarily" reveal her talk show idea, but that she failed to present in her suit "facts or concrete information protectable as a trade secret."

The Real has been renewed through 2018.

{blackbabes} Beyonce Bails On Coachella, Doctor's Orders

0223-beyonce-coachella-INSTAGRAM-01

Beyonce has just canceled her gig at Coachella ... because her pregnancy makes it just too dicey.

Bey cited "doctor's orders" as the reason for bailing on the festival, which is interesting. She performed at the Grammys less than 2 weeks ago, but was seated for most of it. Obviously, doctors don't think it would be wise to even attempt that kind of low-impact performance at Coachella 2 months from now.

As for the festival, sources tell us they are now looking for a replacement, and Beyonce says she'll be back to headline in 2018. Makes ya think ... she's probably planning to release new music between now and then.

Silver lining?

French actress Marie-Josée Croze (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly) is set to recur in Amazon's upcoming Jack Ryan series, from the Lost duo of co-showrunner Carlton Cuse and writer Graham Roland, Platinum Dunes, Skydance Media and Paramount TV. Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan is a reinvention with a modern sensibility of the author's famed hero, starring John Krasinski and Abbie Cornish. It centers on Jack Ryan (Krasinski), an up-and-coming CIA analyst thrust into a dangerous field assignment for the first time. He uncovers a pattern in terrorist communications that launches him into the center of a dangerous gambit with a new breed of terrorism that threatens destruction on a global scale. Croze plays Sandrine, a kick-ass Parisian intelligence agent. Croze is a Cannes Best Actress winner best known for her roles in Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Munich, Birdsong and Murder on the Orient Express. She's repped by Atlas Artists in the U.S., United Agents in the UK and Voyez Mon Agent in France.

Emayatzy Corinealdi (Hand of God) has landed a recurring role opposite Dwayne Johnson on the upcoming third season of HBO comedy series Ballers. Corinealdi was just cast in CBS drama pilot The Get alongside Brad Garrett. She last was seen in History's miniseries Roots, starred opposite Don Cheadle and Ewan McGregor in Miles Ahead for Sony Pictures Classics and next will be seen in the final season of Amazon's original series Hand of God. {blackbabes} Suits Spinoff Centered on Gina Torres' Jessica Eyed at USA Network

Suits Spinoff Jessica

The long arm of the law is reaching back out to Gina Torres.

TVLine has learned exclusively that a Suits spinoff centered on former cast member Torres — whose fan-favorite character Jessica Pearson was written out of the legal drama last September — is quietly being developed.

When reached for comment, a spokesperson for Universal Cable Productions (the studio behind Suits) would neither confirm nor denied the spinoff buzz, telling TVLine, "The Suits team is currently focused on the remaining episodes of Season 6 and what's next for the characters when they return in Season 7."

Torres' exit from the USA Network drama last fall was, by all accounts, extremely amicable. At the time, the actress explained that her decision to move on was purely a geographical one; even though Suits is set in New York, it shoots in Toronto, and Torres said it was "necessary to get back to my life [in Los Angeles] and all the very important things that being on location in Toronto made very difficult to manage."

Shortly thereafter, Torres joined the cast of ABC's L.A.-based The Catch in a one-year deal.

It's not clear where the potential Jessica-centric offshoot would be set, but when last we saw her she was heading to Chicago to start a new life with her ex Malone (DB Woodside, who's now on Fox's Lucifer).

"I don't believe for one second it's the last we'll see of Jessica Pearson," Torres said back in September. "Not. For. One. Second. And don't you either."

{blackbabes} Mariah Carey Now Blames 'Everybody' for That New Year's Eve Debacle

Are you sick of reading about Mariah Carey's now-infamous New Year's Eve performance? Well, too bad, because she's not done talking (or pointing fingers) just yet.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, the songstress offers up a few more of her thoughts about that fateful night on ABC — in which she appeared to lip-sync, then awkwardly exited the stage mid-performance — this time coming out swinging against a rather broad group: literally "everybody."

"This was out of my control, and had everything not been such a total chaotic mess, then I would have been able to make something happen," she asserts. "Even the dancers should have stopped dancing and helped me off the f–king stage. I'm sorry. It was a mess, and I blame everybody. And I blame myself for not leaving after rehearsal."

But lest you mistake Carey's self-blame for any sort of personal growth, consider this quote for a moment:

"If I can't explain it to the entire world, then they're not going to understand it, because it's not what they do," she tells the mag. "Just like I wouldn't understand somebody who had a desk job and how to do that. I couldn't. I literally am incapable of being in the real world and surviving." (Yikes.)

https://nyppagesix.files.wordpress.com/2017/02/beyonce1.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=915

After a show-stopping performance at the Grammys last week, Beyoncé stepped out at the NBA All-Star Game on Sunday.

The 35-year-old "Grown Woman" songstress, who was accompanied by husband Jay Z and daughter Blue Ivy, captured everyone's attention wearing a white T-shirt that barely covered her baby bump and ripped jeans.

The pregnant mom, who is expecting twins, was also sporting a stunning Gucci tiger-print silk kimono featuring a purple fur collar from the spring 2017 menswear collection.

Instagram footage from the star-studded game shows the crowd, and even the Pelican mascot, giving the Carter family much attention.

Earlier in the day, Beyoncé and family were spotted with her sister Solange celebrating Mardi Gras festivities in New Orleans, where the game was held.
