{blackbabes} Former 'Idol' Kimberley Locke wants judge's chair

 

NEW YORK (AP) — Kimberley Locke wants to fill that vacant judge's chair on "American Idol." The season two finalist feels having a former contestant on the show can bring renewed interest to the popular TV singing competition.

"I would love to sit in that chair and, you know, give some advice from the contestant's standpoint because I've been on that stage and I know what it's like," Locke said Monday in an interview with The Associated Press.

But don't consider her a pushover. Locke says she would be brutally honest about each performance and "give it with no fluff."

"When you're a contestant on that show you do need that hard truth sometimes," Locke says, anticipating her critical tone would fall somewhere between the styles of two former judges.

"I'm not quite as nice as Paula (Abdul). Paula's super, supernice but I don't think I'm quite as mean as Simon (Cowell) either."

The empty judges' chairs came after Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez decided not to come back for another season. Last week, Mariah Carey confirmed she would join the Fox show's 12th season. Other names mentioned to fill the missing spot include Nick Jonas, Pharrell Williams and Charlie Sheen.

Locke loves the idea of former contestants coming back to judge. Adam Lambert has also been vocal about his willingness to be a judge on "Idol."

Since finishing behind Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken at the end of the show's second season, Locke embarked on a solo career, releasing two albums on Curb Records. Locke recently started her own label, IAM Entertainment. Her first single, "Finally Free," came out Tuesday. She plans to release another single this year and a full album early next year.

{blackbabes} 'The Vampire Diaries' Season 4: Will Bonnie explore dark magic further?

 

On "The Vampire Diaries," Bonnie (Kat Graham) has always been a woman of principle -- she's not as easily charmed by the vampires as her friends are, but she's fiercely loyal to her friends and determined to protect the people she loves.

In Season 3, her dedication forced her to tap into dark magic -- first to help stop Klaus's heart, and then, in a shocking finale twist, to save Klaus's life by putting his soul into Tyler's body.

Over the course of the series, dark magic has had serious consequences. Her mother lost her powers entirely for 15 years after she completed the same spell Bonnie did, and there's the constant threat of the "sisters," or the dead witches, who have surprising influence from beyond the grave.

We can't reveal much about Bonnie's storyline for Season 4, because her actions in the Oct. 11 season premiere will set in motion a new direction for the character. "What I can say is that the first episode really tees up Bonnie's trajectory for the season; what happens in the first episode will tell us where she's going to go," executive producer Julie Plec tells us.

Bonnie has never been a big fan of vampires, even though they make up a majority of her social circle. She had trouble adjusting when Caroline turned, and was devastated when her mother became a vampire. When she finds out that Elena is in transition, Bonnie -- who has a renewed sense of confidence and independence after the Season 3 finale -- will fight as hard as she can to keep it from happening.

"As we know, she tapped into some really dark stuff at the end of last season to do that dessication spell, and to do the last few spells that she did," Plec says. "And she taps even deeper into it in the first episode. As it always does, it's going to have consequences."

"The Vampire Diaries" writers are looking to give Bonnie a fresh, original take on the dark magic concept, which we've seen in a lot of witch-centric television storylines, from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" to "The Secret Circle."

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Venus and Serena Williams advanced to the quarterfinals in Olympic doubles Tuesday by beating Angelique Kerber and Sabine Lisicki of Germany, 6-2, 7-5.

The match drew an overflow crowd on cozy Court 12, and there were plenty of cheers when the sisters moved within one victory of the medal round. They won the gold medal in 2000 and 2008.

Venus Williams, who is also playing singles, seeks a record fourth gold medal in tennis.

Canadians are putting the eh? in this year's MTV VMAs.

Northern lights like Drake, Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen were all front and centre when this year's MTV Video Music Award nominations were revealed Tuesday morning.

All in all, a six-pack of Canadians earned a dozen nominations in 10 of 15 categories — a massive increase from 2011, when Drake and Bieber earned just one nod each.

This year, the Toronto rapper is one of the leading contenders, tying Rihanna with five nominations. Take Care, the title cut from Drake's acclaimed sophomore album, is up for Video of the Year and Best Male Video, and competes in the art direction and cinematography categories. Meanwhile, his Take Care cut HYFR (Hell Ya F—ing Right) is nominated for Best Hip-Hop Video.

Bieber's Boyfriend is up for Best Male Video and Best Pop Video. If he wins, presumably there will be fondue for all — including his new 26-year-old protege Jepsen, whose summertime smash Call Me Maybe snagged her a shot at Best New Artist.

The rest of the Canadian contingent consists of K'Naan and Nelly Furtado, vying for Best Video With a Message with their collaboration Is Anybody Out There?, and dance duo Duck Sauce (which includes Montreal DJ A-Trak), whose Big Bad Wolf contends for Electronic Dance Music Video and Best Direction.

Other major players include usual suspects like Katy Perry, Beyonce, Adele, M.I.A. and Black Keys, along with newcomers like Lana Del Rey, Gotye, A$AP Rocky, Frank Ocean, One Direction, The Wanted and Imagine Dragons. Also new: Lady Gaga and Madonna were both snubbed this year.

The Moonmen will be handed out Sept. 6 at L.A.'s Staples Center, with the shindig airing live on MuchMusic. Alicia Keys and One Direction are the first confirmed performers.

{blackbabes} Serena Williams won't compete in mixed doubles

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) -- Serena Williams has been nixed in mixed.

Williams won't play mixed doubles at the Olympics, and the two U.S. teams will instead feature four doubles specialists - the Bryan brothers and Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond.

"We all discussed it," U.S. coach Mary Joe Fernandez said Tuesday. "I think it was the best decision for the team."

Raymond and Mike Bryan will be reunited after winning their third Grand Slam title together at Wimbledon this summer. The other U.S. entry will be Huber and Bob Bryan, who have won two major titles together.

Other entries for the competition beginning Wednesday include Lleyton Hewitt and Samantha Stosur of Australia, Victoria Azarenka and Max Mirnyi of Belarus, and Juan Martin del Potro and Gisela Dulko of Argentina.

Williams, who is competing in singles and with her sister Venus in women's doubles, had repeatedly said she also wanted to play mixed doubles. Andy Roddick, John Isner and the Bryans all sought her as a partner.

But she became coy about the subject in recent weeks. Teams were entered Tuesday by each nation's Olympic committee, and Fernandez said three events might have stretched Williams too thin.

"It's a lot of matches in a short amount of time," Fernandez said. "You don't want to jeopardize the other events. We're lucky we have so many possibilities in matchups."

Venus Williams wasn't expected to play mixed doubles because she's already in two other events and dealing with an autoimmune disease that causes fatigue.

She said she and Serena will be glad to concentrate on singles and their doubles partnership.

"We already have a ton of matches ahead of us in just a few days, so I think it was better for us to focus on these two events," Venus said.

Mixed doubles is in the Olympics for the first time since 1924. Competition involves 16 teams, meaning only two victories are needed to reach the medal round.

Serena Williams has played little mixed doubles since early in her career. In 1998, she teamed with Mirnyi at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open to win her only major titles in the event.

While the U.S. entries lack the anticipated star power, they'll be formidable. The Bryan twins are competing as a team in men's doubles and seeded No. 1. The Huber-Raymond partnership is seeded No. 1 in women's doubles.

"What's most important is bringing home medals for the U.S.," Venus Williams said.
